March 3 Monthly Meeting

The March 3 program on “Growing Orchids in DFW” will be presented by Dotty Woodson who has been growing and hybridizing orchids with her husband since 1973. They have 5,000 square feet of greenhouses and have registered 64 hybrids and won many awards. Dotty is retiring from Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center as an Extension Program Specialist and has numerous degrees. Following the presentation, we’ll have our usual table judging and raffle. See you there!

Orchids 101 will be at 2pm in the greenhouse. Kathi will be leading the discussion.

Please note that our annual Spring Show and Sale will take place the next Friday and Saturday, March 8-9 at the Richardson City Hall at 411 W Arapahoe Rd. Setup on Friday begins at 8am – we need your help to set up and help vendors as they arrive. Open to the public on Friday noon-5, Saturday 9-5.

February 3 Monthly Meeting

Our speaker for February’s program will be Manuel Aybar. His topic will be “Taiwan Phalaenopsis Breeding Trends”. Manuel works in the Technology Industry and is originally from the Dominican Republic (a grower’s paradise!). He has been growing orchids for over 25 years, starting with dendrobiums, in which he specializes (phalaenopsis-type). He has been a member of GNTOS since 2000 and is an Accredited Judge with AOS, serving currently as Chair for the Dallas Judging Center. His current research includes the orchids of the Dominican Republic, to which he has gone on numerous orchid collecting trips. He is an often-requested speaker for orchids and attends many US and overseas orchid shows yearly as a judge.

Orchids 101 will begin at 2pm in the greenhouse. Lorna will be talking on recording your orchid collection.

Time to Renew Annual Membership!

GNTOS annual dues are upon us! A renewing (or new) membership is $30 with additional people in the same household being $15. If you pay before January 31, 2019, you will be listed in the 2019 GNTOS Yearbook.

If you haven’t already done so, you can renew your annual dues at our next meeting in January or mail in a check to our Treasurer. Please check the last page of your monthly newsletter for her name and address.

April GNTOS Monthly Meeting Cancelled!

April 1st would normally be our next monthly meeting. However that day is also Easter and so we have decided not to meet. Our next get-together will be Sunday, May 6.

And since that day is also April Fools Day, we want to reassure all of you:
No Fooling, There’s No Meeting!

We had a great show and sale. Thanks to all our members who helped set up, staff the GNTOS information table, clean up afterward, and talk to our visitors during the show. We appreciate you!

One of our vendors had to cancel the day before the show. Our prayers are with Laurie and Sheila Skov of Orchids and Tropicals – we hope that Laurie will recover and be able to return as a vendor again in a future show.
