May 1 meeting – Delightful Cattleyas in Miniature

Peter Lin will be presenting a talk on one of his favorite topics, mini-catts. He will be sharing a program on these charming cattleyas, starting with a review of the miniature species, early hybrids, and then to some of the relevant hybrids of today. He will also review how to grow them. Peter is an accredited judge with the American Orchid Society and a hybridizer of mini-catts. He has thousands of photos of his orchids that can be viewed by typing this address into the internet: http://www.flickr.com/photos/minicatt/collections/. Peter has received numerous AOS awards. His other orchid interests include dendrobiums, angraecoids, and neofinetias which he grows at his home in Southern California.
We will follow Peter’s program with table judging of members’ orchids and then a raffle. Come join us!

Orchids 101 will take place in the greenhouse at 2pm, led by Lorna. The discussion will be on fertilizing your orchids.

Peter will be taking pre-orders for plants that he will ship to members. There will be a 10% discount for pre-orders. Members can view his catalog on his website: www.diamondorchids.com and can order by phone: 909-573-6751 or email: lin.peterT@yahoo.com

On June 5th, we will be having the first of two auctions that the society holds every year. So begin planning now for what you might be able to donate to the auction, as well as deciding what food you can bring to share. Funds raised go to help pay for our Annual Show and Sale (which will be taking place the previous weekend – see information below!).

April 3 meeting – The 2020 Japan Orchid Show in pictures!

The speaker for April’s meeting will be Cesar Uchima, who was born and raised in Peru.  He first encountered orchids when he was a child.  Presently, he is the Director of Pre-Production at Casa Flora, one of the major fern and foliage producers in the United States. Cesar will be presenting the 2020 Japan Grand Prix International Orchid and Flower Show, which is one of the biggest orchid exhibitions in the world.  It was open to the general public over eight days.  Visitors enjoyed intricately arranged orchids and flowers of more than 200 installations.  Exhibitors from over twenty countries were present.  Roughly 100,000 orchids were displayed.  This presentation will take you on a journey to experience this show. Afterwards, we will have our usual table judging for members, and a raffle for everyone!

Orchids 101 will be in the front of the Greenhouse. Charlie will be leading a discussion on controlling mites on your orchids.

March 6 Meeting – Flasking & Growing Orchids from Seed

Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we’ll enjoy being back at Northaven Gardens! For March, Dustin Miller will be joining us via Zoom to talk about flasking. He is a Canadian plant hobbyist who has been growing orchids and rare plants for over 10 years. He more recently started growing orchids from seed in 2018, which has helped shift his approach to orchid culture and care. Growing orchids from seed can feel like an impossible process, but it’s more like making jam or homebrewing beer – a series of steps that takes a bit of time, commitment, the right tools and an interest.

After Dustin’s talk, we’ll end the Zoom part of our meeting and have some fun with our table judging and raffle. Come join us for some colorful community after a long winter!

Come early, at 2pm, for Orchids 101 in the front of the greenhouse. Lorna will be talking about moving orchids outside for the summer.

February 6 Meeting at Northaven! (via Zoom ONLY)

PLEASE NOTE! Due to the storm, Northaven Gardens needed to use all space to protect their plants from freezing, even the Classroom. OUR MEETING WILL BE ONLY OVER ZOOM, not in person! See you on Zoom! We will be able to return to Northaven Gardens next month.

For our February meeting, we get to return to our old stomping grounds, Northaven Gardens! Yes, they’ve finally rebuilt (and rebuilt) all the damage from the tornados, and are ready to host our orchid meetings again. Specific directions are below. They would like us to enter from the west parking lot.

Our first program for 2022 will be “Demystifying New Zealand Moss Growing” given by Carri Raven-Rienmann, OrchiPhile owner, AOS judge, and founding member of the International Phalaenopsis Alliance (IPA). Here is her description of her presentation:
“With so many orchids being sold these days potted in New Zealand Moss, many growers find it a major challenge to deal with as relates specifically to watering & potting. Thanks to many years of visiting Taiwan, & the Taiwan growers’ generous sharing of information, I’ve come to appreciate its amazing benefits over bark or other mixes, something I would have never imagined many years ago when we all first started working with moss. I’ve been surprised at how well it functions for almost all genera, from Phalaenopsis to those you wouldn’t suspect like Cattleyas, Oncidinae & Dendrobiums. In this presentation, I’ll cover the important basics of growing successfully in moss, from the quality of the moss to potting, watering & fertilizing, ending with a great instructional video made by a friend in Taiwan demonstrating potting and mounting your orchids properly using this medium.”

Our program for February will be via Zoom and in-person. Only Carri’s presentation will be on Zoom at 2:30. The raffle and table judging will not. Look at the bottom of this article for the Zoom link information!

Orchids 101 is back! Join us at 2pm in the new greenhouse. Charlie will lead a discussion on Growing Orchids in Dallas Winters.

NO January meeting!

We will not be having our normal GNTOS meeting on January 2nd.

You probably already know the reason. On New Year’s Eve there are always a few orchids that take it tooooo far and nobody wants to deal with them so soon after. Most orchids are fine but some, usually the ones with AOS awards, just don’t know when to stop. They are all acting superior, and all “look at me, I got an award and you didn’t, and then it just gets crazy. Next thing you know one of them unlocks the fertilizer cabinet and they break out the high nitrogen stuff and they all overindulge. But when you check on them the next day they are just sitting there. Quiet. Too quiet. But you know what they did. And they know you know. You can almost hear the snickering. And don’t even try to ask which one is responsible because they won’t ever point a leaf at each other. But I don’t need to tell you. You’ve got orchids and I’m sure this happens to you as well. Anyway, no meeting on an 2nd. Some orchids just have to spoil it for the rest of us.

(Thanks to David who put this in our monthly newsletter! 🙂 )

Dec. 5 Auction!

This month we will have our semi-annual Auction. Bring plants and divisions you can donate, as well as collectibles or any orchid related item. This is the event that we do to raise funds for the society and for the Spring show and sale, so bring your bidding spirit and get ready to have some fun. It all starts at 2:30.

The auction will take place at Classic Wine Storage on 14372 Proton, Dallas. Join us there!

November 7 meeting

This month’s meeting will feature the classic orchid Brassavola nodosa. Jim Williams, an AOS judge with the Dallas Judging Center and a long-time GNTOS member, will speak on the “Lady of the Night” orchid, discussing it’s progeny and judging standards. Join us! We will have our judging table as usual for members, and the raffle. Snacks are provided.

Our meeting location is at the Preston Tower Condos at 6211 W. Northwest Hwy., Dallas, 75225, approximately ½ mile west of NorthPark Mall.  Please park on the east side of the building and enter through the front door of the building. Check in at the front desk and they will direct you to the meeting in the community room.  After the meeting, exit from a door on the east side directly into the parking lot.

September 5 meeting

Dotty Woodson of Fort Worth will be speaking to us this Sunday on Insect and Disease Control at 2:30 pm. Dottie has been
growing and hybridizing orchids with her husband since 1973. They have 5,000 square feet of greenhouses and
have registered 64 hybrids and have won many national AOS awards. Dotty retired recently from Texas A&M
AgriLife Research and Extension Center as an Extension Program Specialist. Members, bring your orchids for our table judging. As usual, snacks are also provided!

We are enjoying our new meeting location at the Preston Tower Condos at 6211 W. Northwest Hwy., Dallas, 75225, approximately ½ mile west of NorthPark Mall.  Everyone will need to park in the business parking lot, on the east side of the building and then enter the front door of the building. Check in at the front desk and they will direct you to the meeting in the community room.  After the meeting, we can exit from a door on the east side directly to the parking lot.

August 1 meeting at our new location – please check out details below for parking and entering the building.

GNTOS is pleased to have Tom Reddick speak to us Sunday, August 1 on “Mastering the Art of Orchid Growing without a Greenhouse”.  Tom began growing orchids at age 9, and has almost 40 years of experience in the hobby.  In the past 20 years, he has focused his attention on mastering orchid cultivation techniques in a home environment by growing out a wide range of orchids from flask to seedling size.  Tom will be bringing orchids to sell, plus will be providing orchids for our raffle.  We can’t ask for better than that!  So join us for a fun afternoon of orchid talk at our new meeting location, Preston Tower Condos!

We will be in a room at the Preston Tower Condos at 6211 W. Northwest Hwy., Dallas, 75225, approximately ½ mile west of NorthPark Mall.  Everyone will need to park in the business parking lot, on the east side of the building and enter the front door of the building. Everyone will need to check in at the front desk and tell the clerk they are there to see David Gould for a meeting in the community room. The room is large enough to accommodate space for snacks,  plant tables for our members’ orchids, and the Snoopers Table, plus seating for our members and friends.

We’re not sure about the mask requirements, so please bring one with you as a precaution. Thank you!
