June 6 Meeting – Yellow Cattleyas

The society will be meeting Sunday, June 6 at the Garland Senior Center at 600 W Avenue A, Garland, TX 75040. Karl Varian, one of our members and a judge with the Dallas Judging Center, will be presenting a program on yellow cattleyas and their breeding in the past and today. Cattleyas are the orchid most people think of when orchids are mentioned because they have long been used in corsages.

Masks are required at the Senior Center. We will be having table judging as usual – members, please bring flowering orchids to share! We’re not sure if we’ll have the plants for a raffle yet, which is open to members and guest alike. However, we will have everything else as usual, so come on out and join us as we begin again to meet in person for our monthly meetings!

2021 Member Registration

If you were a paid member of GNTOS last year, then you are automatically registered for 2021. You do NOT need to register for this year!

We are meeting again! Plans are in place for our June meeting and beyond. For now, the location is the Garland Senior Activity Center, 600 W Avenue A, Garland, TX 75040. This is the location for the Dallas Orchid Judging Center each month. Be watching for more information for our June meeting!

May 2, 2021 GNTOS Meeting!

The Garland Senior Center is going to open in May, so we will start meeting at our regular time at 2:30pm this Sunday! There is no speaker – we will have a fun social time to renew our acquaintances, discuss the remainder of the year and just enjoy ourselves. Bring snacks to share — let’s all get reacquainted and get back into our orchid habit. See you this Sunday!

Stay Tuned!

We are waiting to see when and where it will be best to restart our monthly meetings. In the meantime, keep growing those orchids! Members – send David pictures of orchids you have blooming so we can enjoy them in lieu of our Plant Table!

March 1 Meeting

MEETING PLACE CHANGE:  We are back at the Garland Senior Center (600 West Avenue A, Garland, TX 75040) this month as the Harrington library is being used for early voting.
We meet at 2pm with Orchids 101 starting at 1:30.

Stephanie Varnum has been a Texas Master Naturalist since 2002 and has volunteered as part of a Citizens Science Project for 16 years doing an annual survey of native orchids in Texas. She will be giving an overview of the many species of wild orchids that grow here. They range from moderately common to extremely rare and critically endangered.  Come and hear how you can help with this annual survey! Starting this year, the survey has been adopted as GNTOS’s volunteer education opportunity.
We will have our usual raffle and table judging after the presentation.

Orchids 101 will be led by Kathi at 1:30.

February 2 Meeting

Karl Varian, a Society member and student judge with the Dallas Judging Center, will be speaking on yellow cattleyas. Karl became a student judge in 2016. He has been growing orchids since 1960 and his collection is a collage of warm and intermediate growing orchids. We will be having our usual table judging and raffle after the presentation. Remember, we are meeting at the Harrington Library, 1501 18th St., Plano, TX 75074.

Orchids 101 will be at 1:30pm with Lorna leading the discussion.

January 5 Meeting

Our January meeting will feature AOS Judge Dan Callahan, who will speak on “Orchid Shopping 101” at 2:30pm. Have you ever wondered how to decide what kind of orchid to buy and where are good places to get one? Dan has 15 years of growing experiences to share with us. Come and pick up some shopping and growing tips!

We will be meeting for the next several months at the Harrington Library, 1501 18th St., Plano, TX 75074. There is ample parking at the library with no steps. The room is well lit and on the left before you enter the library.  We will have our usual table judging and raffle, so come and join us!

We will begin with Orchids 101 at 2pm just as we have done at Northaven Gardens. Kathi will be leading the discussion.

Temporary Meeting Location

We now have a location to meet until Northaven Gardens has rebuilt their facilities. We will be at the Harrington Library, 1501 18th St., Plano, TX 75074. There is ample parking with no steps. The room is well lit and on the left before you enter the library.

It may some time before we know when Northaven Gardens will be ready for societies like ours to meet there again each month. You can follow their rebuilding progress at nhg.com.

December 1 Monthly Meeting

We will be meeting at the Classic Wine Storage, 14372 Proton, Dallas, TX 75244 for December. For now, this location is for December only. This month is our 2nd auction of the year. Review your collection and bring orchids you can donate to the auction, then bring money to buy some new ones! Also, we start out with a meal together so bring some food to share. The auction follows the meal. There is no Orchids 101 or raffle so we have more time to enjoy the auction!

Keep watch here for locations for the monthly meetings. We would like to find a place where we can go each month for the time being. It may some time before we know when or if Northaven Gardens will be rebuilding facilities for societies like ours to meet there again each month. You can follow Northaven Gardens’ rebuilding progress at nhg.com.
