An Opportunity to Survey Orchids in the Dallas Area

The first Cedar Ridge Preserve (7171 Mountain Creek Pkwy, Dallas, TX 75249) will host a series of surveys starting Monday June 2, and then every following Monday through mid-July.  Contact Charles_M_Hess@ymail.com if you are interested in being on a survey.  The preserve is closed on Mondays, so your name must be on his list to have access.  The preserve staff lets listees in the front gate between 7:30 and 8:00AM.  Plenty of parking is available since the park is closed.  Signees will get calls if survey days are rescheduled due to weather.

The survey lasts 3 to 4 hours.  Usually, about 15-20 people show up who are then divided into two or three teams for the day.  Teams are organized at 8 AM at the park benches in front of the building.  Restrooms and a drinking fountain are at the preserve center.  Good hiking shoes and long pants are recommended and a light t-shirt as it gets warm. Sunglasses are not needed as the trails are shady.  Some parts of the trail are uneven with several patches of limestone to step over.  Walking sticks are handy, as well as fanny packs for snacks and water bottles.

You will meet members of the North Texas Master Naturalists who provide most surveyors, as well as BRIT (Botanical Research Institute of Texas) staff members.  One will be a Summer Intern sponsored by GNTOS through SWROGA fundraising.

If people just want to go on their own on days other than Mondays, the orchids can be seen by looking for yellow flags, usually seen within 20 yards of the trails.  Maps for the trail locations of orchid areas will be available at our GNTOS meetings.  Later in the season, the plants will start blooming as the spikes get taller.  Parking during open hours is at a premium and expands along the roadside inside the park.

Sept 1 Growing Spathoglottis

For our September meeting, Vee Dhu will discuss the varieties and culture of the terrestrial orchid Spathoglottis, which does very well in our area. Vee, born in Vietnam, has been loving and growing orchids since her youth, and is working on becoming an accredited AOS judge. Her collection currently includes cattleya, paphiopedilum, and phals. She knows a greenhouse is in her future! We will be having our usual orchid table judging and raffle.

Orchids 101 will be with Charlie in the greenhouse at 2pm. Bring your questions and get some answers!

On this same Labor Day weekend, PlantCon will be in the Dallas area – Saturday August 31 and Sunday September 1. They will be at the Marriott Allen Convention Center, 777 Waters Creek Blvd. Allen, TX 75013. Entrance fee is $37.

The PlantCon International Convention will host over 100 vendors catering to the entire plant community. The fun event is set to bring together plant enthusiasts from around the world complete with speakers, panels, workshops, exhibitors, and more.

If you volunteer to host our GNTOS table at PlantCon for a 2-hr shift either Saturday or Sunday, you’ll be able to get in as an exhibitor. Be aware that Sunday is our GNTOS meeting and so the 2pm and 4pm Sunday shifts will conflict with our usual meeting time. See the sign-up sheet from David for details!

THANK YOU, SOCIETY MEMBERS, for a great GNTOS Orchid Show!

We had a great show and sale.  Thanks to all our members who helped set up, staff the GNTOS information table, clean up afterward, and talk to our visitors during the show.  We appreciate you!

One of our vendors had to cancel the day before the show.  Our prayers are with Laurie and Sheila Skov of Orchids and Tropicals – we hope that Laurie will recover and be able to return as a vendor again in a future show.

Orchid Society Members: Can You Help?

Thursday, Feb. 15, 2018 at the Magnolia Hotel Dallas Park Cities

We have been given a great opportunity to highlight orchids and our society.  Manny received a very special request from Art Chadwick

“I was wondering if any orchid society members in the Dallas area have some large flowered Cattleyas in bloom that we could borrow for a photoshoot with Laura Bush on Thursday. The event will be written up later this year in Orchids magazine.
We could use up to a dozen plants – any color.
The event is from 3 to 5pm and they could be dropped off at the Magnolia Hotel in Park Cities by noon.
Thanks for your consideration!”    Art Chadwick   Chadwick & Son Orchids    Powhatan, VA

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

  • They are able to use about 6 orchids – they are are looking for large flowers, multiple blooms, any color.
  • Remember to groom plants as if they were going to a show
  • Have the plant name and  your name marked in the pot or on the base somewhere
  • You should use nice/decorative pots
  • Drop off time Thursday is between 10am and Noon
  • Leave them at the Concierge desk with Anna – she will have a special place to keep the orchids
  • Pickup time is after 8pm
They want six plants, but we don’t know how many will be available.
So, if you have a suitable plant, bring it!
